In collaboration with Yves Lu
After purchasing the existing freight depot building in 2011, SCI-Arc established a permanent presence in the rapidly developing Arts District of downtown Los Angeles. The quarter mile long building was the third found home for the school, its unusual form and exaggerated length establishing a de-facto iconography for the institute. Acting as an initial catalyst for accelerated development in the area, the school now seeks to lead again by designing and building its next incarnation.
The current freight depot is to be converted into student housing and a new, larger building housing all of the spaces of the school is to be constructed on the empty lot immediately adjacent and west.
The next version of SCI-Arc represents an opportunity for the architecture of the school to be both intensely responsive to its needs and organizations, and to forge a particular form of the school that reimagines what the institution is both as a work of architecture and as an image in the city.”
